MILTON’S MINI MAKEOVER

We are taking Milton and Betsy to a towing course next weekend, so we thought we’d pick Milton up today and do a few little things to improve him.

Mattress Topper

The mattress that came with the van was barely used and it was an innerspring mattress but I still woke up sore after a couple of nights on it. I did some research and finally decided on a Muscle Mat mattress topper. They are an Australian company and I’d talked to a few people in the Caravan/Camping groups that had used them and they were impressed. It weighs just over 5kg and postage is free. It wasn’t the cheapest option, but it will be an excellent addition to Milton. I do love a good night’s sleep!

Cupboard Shelves

Both the bedside cupboards have hanging space. We’d like to have some hanging space but I think 2 whole cupboards are a little much. I was in Aldi a couple of weeks ago and they had the storage shelves for $8.99. Milton was in storage, so I had no idea about the dimensions but thought I’d take a chance anyway. They couldn’t have fit more perfectly.

Coffee Maker

I’m not a massive coffee drinker, I probably only have one every few weeks. But Brett does like his coffee. For Christmas, mum and dad bought him a Wacaco minipresso. It makes a shot of coffee without electricity from coffee grounds. For those who like strong coffee, you may need to have half a cup or do it twice as it is only equal to a shot. It will suit Brett if he wants something different from a standard Moccona though (which he doesn’t actually mind).

New Lithium Batteries and extra power

This upgrade was done a few weeks ago but I thought it would be worthwhile mentioning. We removed one large heavy AGM battery and replaced it with 2 iTechWorld Lithium Batteries. They were installed with a panel that gives us a readout of the battery percentage (which we didn’t have before). While that was being installed, we also got some extra USB ports on the kitchen wall, above the shelf and above the bed. We also had an inverter installed so we can run appliances from 240v if we really need it. We plan to add solar panels at some stage in the future.

Fans

We picked up some Sorroco Fans at a garage sale a few months ago. Apparently, these are the “knees bees” of fans in the caravan world. They normally retail for around $150-$220 each. We got them for…..wait for it……. a whole $5 each! The seller said they had stopped working but we were willing to take the risk. We got home and Brett took a look and the fan blades hadn’t been clipped in properly. He clipped them in and they have been working perfectly ever since. We also picked up an Adventure Kings Picnic set at the same garage sale for $10. This set is really light which is important. It is definitely worth checking out second-hand items if you get the chance.

Other bits and pieces

So, I do try to go second-hand when I get the chance but Aldi had caravanning stuff for sale today and I couldn’t help myself. Plus they had stuff we needed. We got a Carbon Monoxide Alarm, awning straps, collapsable containers, a collapsible bucket, a set of UHF Radios, a toilet brush, a paper towel holder and a toothbrush holder.

I am sure that we will continue to improve and change things around but I was very excited to give Milton this Mini Makeover before we head to Caboolture for our towing course next weekend.
