Last Sunday, we were on our way to buy a replacement mattress as I was sick of waking up with sore hips every morning. Brett was driving through Warrandyte South suburbia, and I was half looking around and half in my own little world when out of the corner of my eye, I spied a sign for cheese, and when I looked around I saw something about wine too. There was no other option but to google it while Brett kept driving blissfully unaware of my newfound interest in the phone.

It turns out that the Rob Dolan Winery just happened to be open. From the moment I called them to enquire about parking the van until we left, the staff were friendly, helpful and lovely. We sat on the patio and asked to do a guided wine tasting. It is complimentary if you buy a bottle of wine or $15 if you don’t. Our Wine Specialist Nick (we think that was his name) was very knowledgeable, humorous and friendly. He even promised that he could make me like Chardonnay. I told him that was a big call, but I was up for the challenge. We worked our way through the tasting list and when we got to the Chardonnay, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn’t too bad. He then gave us a taste of a different vintage Chardonnay so we could see the difference that the environment makes on the grapes in any given year. It was so interesting to taste the difference between the two. Now I didn’t love it enough to buy it (we found plenty of others that we loved so much more), but I would happily drink it again.

They have a food menu that includes cheese from Stone & Crow Cheese Company, which we didn’t try as we had just not long had breakfast. However, they stock the cheese for retail sales as well so we did purchase some and are very much looking forward to trying it with a nice glass of Pinot Gris.

It was a delightful, spur-of-the-moment activity for a Sunday morning. We were so pleased that we were able to spend a couple of hours in the sunshine, overlooking a beautiful view with great conversation and delicious wine. We left with some wine, chocolate, cheese and a smile on our faces. And I got the best night’s sleep I’ve had since we left.
