Last weekend we had family visiting from Canberra. Last time they were here, we showed them the sights of Maryborough and Hervey Bay. This time we headed to Bundaberg QLD. Bundaberg offers a unique blend of experiences from tasting exquisite spirits and ciders to exploring iconic distilleries and scenic coastal drives.

Our weekend kicked off with a visit to the Kalki Moon distillery, a hidden gem nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Bundaberg. As we stepped into the distillery, the aromatic notes of handcrafted gins and liqueurs immediately captivated our senses. The owner, Kylie, guided us through the distillation process, sharing insights into the art of creating their local spirits which include Rum, Vodka, Gin, and Liqueurs. The tour finished with a tasting of many of their creations.

We then embarked on a scenic drive to Bargara. The coastal route offered stunning views of the ocean. Bargara’s laid-back charm was the perfect backdrop for a leisurely seaside lunch, as we enjoyed fish and chips overlooking the beach and watching the waves lap against the shore. We stopped at Ballistic Beer for a tasting platter and enjoyed dinner at The Club Hotel.

The next day we couldn’t resist exploring the history and flavours of Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. This iconic local brand has been crafting premium beverages for decades, and a tour of their facility revealed the meticulous processes that go into creating their signature ginger beer and other delightful sodas. Sampling their range of drinks brought back nostalgic memories of childhood. Burgundy Creaming Soda for the win! As suggested by staff, I am looking forward using it to make a delicious spider to enjoy.

We then headed to the Bundy Rum Distillery and snagged the last 4 tickets for the next guided tour. As we stepped into the world of Australia’s most famous rum, we were transported back in time to the origins of this beloved spirit. The tour took us through the entire rum-making process, from fermentation to distillation and aging in oak barrels. The aroma of molasses and the rich history behind the brand made it an interesting and eye-opening experience. Even for me, who doesn’t normally drink rum. I did, however, end up buying a bottle of Salted Caramel Rum Liqueur.

Our day continued with a visit to Ohana Cider House & Winery. This family-owned establishment brought a touch of Hawaiian-inspired hospitality to the Australian countryside. The cider-tasting experience was a refreshing departure from the traditional, as we sampled a variety of handcrafted ciders bursting with natural flavours. We enjoyed a platter of smooth Kenilworth cheese and tomato relish and couldn’t go past a tasty homemade pizza.

Some afternoon games and drinks at the Airbnb kept us busy until dinner. We then met more family for dinner at Bert’s Restaurant, known for its exquisite cuisine and cozy ambiance. Upon entering, we were greeted by warm lighting and an inviting atmosphere that exuded elegance. The menu, a fusion of modern Australian cuisine with international influences, promised an exciting gourmet journey. We indulged in share platters that were beautifully presented and tasted beyond amazing. The cocktails were definitely a highlight as was the wine and beer and rum.

Feeling like we were young again with some cocktails under our belt we thought that we would hit the town, so we headed to The Library Bar. This funky little place is set up with thousands of books surrounding little booths. The atmosphere was definitely something a little different and pretty cool. But we weren’t done yet. We headed back to the Club Hotel, but by this time the quiet little pub from the night before was like a pumping nightclub with live music from Abby Skye and the Batman. We danced the night away like a bunch of young 20-year-olds. Which we are not and felt much more like the middle-aged people we are when we woke up with sore feet the next day. A quick visit to the Alexandra Park Zoo before we headed home via Tinaberries for freshly made strawberry ice cream cones.

We had an incredible weekend hanging out with some of our favourite family members, tasting delectable foods and drinking tasty cider, beer, rum, and gin (this list could go on). We came home very full (our hearts, our stomachs, and our livers).
